The one thing I always say, that I know I shouldn't: "You're going to make a mess."

My 6 yr old step daughter is SO messy. She can't eat anything anywhere, so matter how uncrumbly it is, without making a huge mess. Everything she touches turns to shambles. Now I'm to the point where if she wants to eat something I make her stay in the kitchen where I can clean up with sponge and broom afterwards. When she keeps begging and asking why, I sometimes can't stop myself from saying, "If you eat that in the living room you're just going to make a huge mess again."

I know saying this is wrong on so many levels, and I do give her chances sometimes, and I do praise her when she doesn't make a mess, but there's only so many times you can vacuum crushed food out of the carpet in a day.
